My thanks to the Officers & Committee of WELKS for the invitation to judge our lovely breed, and to my Stewards Mr Rose & Mrs Smith who ensured that things ran so smoothly. It is only three years since I last judged Deerhounds and I was amazed how much the breed has changed since then. What has happened to the workmanlike but elegant breed we had? Far too many dogs & bitches are too fine and lacking in substance to enable them to do the job they were bred for. Many of the youngsters had poor fronts while many older hounds lacked drive from the rear, and although they moved quickly the movement could be described as plodding rather than driving. I was however pleased with the quality of my winners who fitted the standard as I interpret it.
PD (3,1) 1 Edwards Dark And Discreet From Brackenland Well built 10 month dog with pleasant head, dark eye and neat well carried ears. Better topline when relaxed than when on the move. Good depth of chest and length of leg. Movement coming and going still to settle and would like a little more extension in front. 2 Taylors Kilbourne James Dene Very raw 8 month dog, longer in body than 1, but without the depth and width. Strode out well in profile but not good coming and going. Long in back and loin and without the strength in rear quarters of 1.
JD (6,1) 1 Hawkins Kwaricott Archimago Well built balanced youngster. Pleasing head, dark eye, good strong neck, good angulation with strong rear quarters, correct topline which he kept on the move. Strode out well in profile, but in common with all the young dogs still needs to settle in front. Very promising. 2 Hawkins Kwaricott Asclepius Litter brother to one. Shares all his brother's attributes and moves better in profile but is let down by his front movement, which has plenty of time to improve. Liked his overall outline. 3. Peach's Kilbourne Firechief
PGD (13,3) A lovely class. 1 Helps Greyfriars Gillie Of Beardswood Beautifully balanced young dog with pleasing head, dark eye and neat well carried ears. Good width and depth to chest, well laid shoulder and nice true front. Well muscled rear quarters which gave him plenty of drive. Presented in super condition and seriously considered for RCC. 2. Peach's Readwald Thor To Kilbourne. Longer cast than 1 but still well balanced. Ample width and depth of ribcage with good tuck up and well muscled rear quarters, but not quite the width through stifle of 1. Movement coming and going was equal to 1, but beaten by the length of stride. 3 Girling's Pyefleet Rollo
LD (12,5) 1 Owen & Brodie's Wolfcastle Wood Melick Well balanced typical dog, pleasing head with correct dark eye and well carried ears, strong neck and well laid shoulder. Good front and well padded feet, ample width and depth of chest and good tuck up. Preferred his head and length of neck and topline to that of 2. Well muscled rear quarters which although appeared to move well in profile was rather hocky when viewed from the rear. Well presented. 2 Cannon & Wicksteads Kilbourne Osbourne at Abayomi Very close to one. Rather longer in leg than 1 although still quite a well balanced hound. Good width throughout, especially through stifle. Pleasant head and expression. Again profile movement very good and although front was very good let down slightly by his rear when going away. 3. Guise Saintvalery Dazzler
OD (5) 1 Peach's Ch Greyflax Myth To Kilbourne Well balanced masculine quality hound. Excellent length of leg and depth of chest with good spring of rib. Plenty of width through stifle with good length of second thigh and well developed muscle. Pleasant head with darkish eye and neat well carried ears. Movement sound with long easy stride and very true coming and going, topline good when moving. Well presented. CC 2 Helps Beardswood Marmion Typical quality hound with probably the best front of the day. Well boned, good strong elegant neck, well balanced angulation and ample depth and width throughout. Well let down hock and lovely bend to stifle. Profile movement equal to that of 1, but not co-operating with his handler coming and going. Looked better stood when relaxed. MPB (2) 1 Phillips Just Jude For Ladygrove. Very raw well balanced 8 month baby. Lovely feminine head with darkish eye, set on long neck. Well balanced angulation front and rear, good feet and true front and rear. Well sprung ribcage, good topline. Strode out well in profile and true coming and going. 2 Judson's Graizelund Carouselambra Feminine head and expression, dark eye and neat ear carriage. Rather narrow throughout with not the depth or width of 1. Rather upright in front and not the rear angulation or topline of 1. Needs more training to co-operate with handler.
PB (6) 1 Peach's Witch Way To Kilbourne Typical feminine head and expression. Dark eye, strong neck, well laid shoulder and good width and depth of ribcage. Good width through stifle, well let down hock, and neat feet. Kept her topline on the move, strode out well with drive, true coming and going. Best Puppy. 2 Phillips Ladygrove Belle Starr Very close decision. Liked her head and neck, but not quite as wide or deep as 1. Well balanced angulation front and rear, ribcage a little short causing rather a steep tuck up. Movement in profile equal to 1, not quite as good coming and going, well presented happy puppy. 3 Steinborn-Busse Gentiehun Mercedes
